The Tibetische Zentrum e.V. Hamburg, created in 1977, enjoys the protectorship of H.H. the Dalai Lama and has organized three previous visits of His Holiness in Germany: 1982, 1991 and 1998.
To organize the event with the Dalai Lama in 2007, the association has incorporated a non-profit, limited liability company called: Tibetisches Zentrum Event gGmbH.
The Tibetische Zentrum has the avowed objective of preserving the Buddhist religion according to Tibetan tradition.
Geshe Pema Samten, an expert Tibetan teacher, who was trained at the monastic university of Sera, is in charge of transmitting Buddhist teachings. In addition, there are Western specialists of Buddhism who have been studying and practicing Buddhism under the guidance of Tibetan masters for many years.
Studies and meditation are the main activities of the association. The "Systematic Study of Buddhism," a course for working adults, offers a fundamental understanding of Buddha's teachings. Courses for beginners and advanced students are offered in the meditation house in the Luneburg Heath.
Beyond that, the Tibetan Center is committed to aiding Tibetan refugees in India, to inter-religious dialogue, and it publishes its own magazine: "Tibet und Buddhismus" (in German). The magazine has a Web archive with many interesting articles on Tibetan Buddhism and on Tibet.
